Welcoming Checklist

Prepare a washbasin or ensure hand-washing facilities are easily accessible before the meal
Set aside a quiet, clean space for prayer if needed

Stock pastries, makroud, or sweets to serve alongside
Check for type C & E plugs or adapters
Have mint tea or Turkish coffee ready immediately on arrival

PetsCats are beloved and present no concerns, but dogs need careful handling in advance as many Tunisian guests — particularly more observant ones — will need clear separation from them in the home.

In conservative circles, men and women may socialise separately — follow your guest's cues on mixed-gender situations
Respect for elders is deeply ingrained — older family members are deferred to in both decisions and conversation
In Tunisian culture, the group — especially the family — takes priority over personal needs or preferences
Eye contact with those of higher status is sometimes avoided as a sign of respect — don't read this as disengagement

Silence in conversation is not uncomfortable — don't feel compelled to fill every pause
Greet the eldest people in the room first, then move through by rough order of age
Handshakes between people of the same gender are standard — between men and women, always wait for the woman to extend her hand first. If she doesn't, a respectful nod is correct
Greet everyone individually on arrival and departure — never give a general wave to the room

Keep all pet areas clean and completely away from food preparation spaces
Keep your dog away from the guest room, prayer space, and kitchen at all times
Ask directly how comfortable your guest is — and adjust accordingly
Wash your hands after handling your dog before any food preparation or serving
Keep pets out of the guest room overnight unless explicitly invited in
Clean pet hair, odors, and common areas
Clean litter boxes / cages
Groom pets (if needed)

Dogs are often kept for guarding or outdoor purposes rather than as fully indoor companions. Guests may not expect dogs inside living spaces

Considerations:

Large or unfamiliar dogs may cause discomfort, especially indoors
Close contact (licking, jumping) may be unwelcome
Dogs in kitchens or near food areas can be seen as inappropriate
Clear control and physical separation increase comfort

Cats are very common and generally accepted, especially in outdoor or semi-indoor environments. Guests may be comfortable with cats nearby but not necessarily in close contact indoors.

Considerations:

Keeping cats off dining tables and food preparation areas is important
Limit access to bedrooms or private spaces unless guests are comfortable

Rodents (such as hamsters or similar pets) are less common in households. Some guests may feel uneasy or unfamiliar with them.
