Dogs are common in Ecuador, but are often kept with clearer indoor/outdoor boundaries. Many households keep dogs in patios or outdoor areas, not fully inside all living spaces. Guests may expect dogs, but not in kitchens, dining areas, or bedrooms.
Considerations:
- Large or fast-approaching dogs may cause discomfort due to caution around street dogs
- Jumping, licking, or being on furniture may be seen as intrusive
- Calm behavior and controlled introductions help build comfort
- Offering to keep the dog in a separate space is appreciated
Cats are present in some homes in Ecuador, but are generally less central to household life than dogs. They are typically kept independent or semi-outdoor, not constantly in close contact with guests. Guests may not expect cats to roam freely on furniture, counters, or dining areas
Considerations:
- Cats on kitchen surfaces or eating areas may be viewed as unhygienic
- Litter box odors or visible placement can strongly affect comfort
- Not all guests will want physical interaction—cats jumping onto laps or beds may feel intrusive
- Cleanliness (hair, smells, surfaces) plays a major role in guest perception
- Providing distance and letting guests initiate interaction is preferred
Rodents are less commonly kept indoors in Ecuador, and may be unfamiliar to some guests. They are typically expected to be fully contained in cages, not handled or roaming in shared spaces. Guests may be sensitive to odors, bedding, or cage cleanliness, especially in enclosed indoor areas
Considerations:
- Cages in kitchens, dining areas, or guest bedrooms may be viewed as unhygienic
- Strong smells from bedding or waste can significantly impact comfort
- Handling rodents in front of guests (especially near food) may cause discomfort
- Some guests may associate rodents with pests rather than pets
- Keeping enclosures clean, contained, and away from main guest areas is important
